It doesn’t take much to sell me on a James Gray movie at this point, but his latest film Ad Astra has been one that we have been eagerly awaiting since it was first announced. Gray’s name is enough to warrant our attention, but attached to a space movie starring Brad Pitt going on an outer space mission to find his father played by Tommy Lee Jones? Say no more. We’re there.
We have been waiting quite a bit for the first trailer after a few delays that pushed Ad Astra back from its original January 11th (and then May 24th) release date to its current September 20th release. Fox finally dropped the trailer at 3 AM tonight, and the film looks to have the potential to be every bit as epic as we had hoped.
After a massive power event called The Surge hits Earth, astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) learns that his father Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), though to be lost on a distant mission, is actually alive. He is forced to go on a journey to the outer edge of the solar system to find his father and try to save our planet, with his father possibly being a threat that he may have to handle in order to do so. With acclaimed cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema behind the lens, it’s no surprise that there are some truly stunning shots in the trailer, with many more hopefully saved for the film itself.
Along with Pitt and Jones, Ad Astra also stars Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, and Jamie Kennedy, in what is most likely a more dramatic role (which I’m very interested in).
