At long last, It’s back in the first look at It: Chapter 2.
We finally have a teaser trailer for the much-anticipated sequel to the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel. IT: Chapter 2 sees the grown-up Losers Club scattered to the four winds twenty-seven years after the events of the first film. Most of the Losers have attained significant professional success in that time and have completely forgotten the evils they faced in childhood. However, they are forced to confront this evil again when a series of phone calls from the one Loser who stayed behind summons them back to Derry, Maine. With their memories and friendship restored, the Losers will once again be forced to fight an ancient evil that threatens to destroy all they love and the town they once called home.
The previous film, the fourth-highest grossing horror film of all time as of this writing, showed Hollywood that horror can be profitable, and has kicked off a sort of renaissance for Stephen King adaptations – including Hulu’s Castle Rock and the recent Pet Sematary remake. As such, horror fans and general audiences alike have high expectations for Chapter 2. Some solid casting choices (Bill Hader, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Isaiah Mustafa, among others) and a creepy-as-ever looking Bill Skarsgard certainly bode well, as does Jessica Chastain’s claim that this film set a record for most fake blood used for a single scene.
And this trailer does a good job of both creeping us out and leaving us wanting more. We see the adult Losers shown against their 1989 counterparts and hear Pennywise’s unsettling laugh, but thankfully, we aren’t shown the entire movie in the trailer, spoilers and all, as was the case with the Pet Sematary marketing. This is a solid teaser, with just enough blood and dread to hook us. However, one brief shot of a CGI Pennywise at the end is concerning. IT was widely criticized for overusing CGI, and this may be a sign we’ll get more of the same in Chapter 2. We’ll likely get a better sense of this with the next trailer, but let’s hope Chapter 2 contains more practical effects to create some genuine scares.
IT: Chapter 2 creeps into theaters September 6, 2019.
