One of the big movies out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Late Night, which was bought by Amazon Studios for a hefty $13 million price tag. And today, the first trailer for Late Night has arrived ahead of its release date this summer.
The film stars Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury, a legendary late-night talk show host who is a tough woman to please and feared by her staff. Things change with the arrival of Mindy Kaling as Molly, the first woman to be hired on Katherine’s all-male writing staff. Her arrival comes when the network is ready to cancel the long-running show due to poor ratings. They need to find a way to work together and see if a career can be made while saving another one.
By now we all know what Emma Thompson will bring to the role, but what’s really interesting is to see Kaling in such a big role in a feature film (not counting her recent supporting role in last year’s A Wrinkle in Time), paired alongside talent such as Thompson. Directed by Nisha Ganatra based on Kaling’s screenplay, Late Night looks like a good blend of comedy and drama with two strong female leads. The cast also includes Amy Ryan, John Lithgow, Ike Barinholtz, Hugh Dancy, Max Casella, Denis O’Hare, and I, Tonya‘s Paul Walter Hauser.
Late Night will be released via Amazon Studio on June 7th. Find the trailer posted below.
