But as more news has been coming out about the film – with an initial trailer in time for Christmas – my anticipation for the Neil Marshall-helmed film has been growing. And now, just over a month out from release, there’s a new red-band Hellboy trailer (and a green-band one, too) for your viewing pleasure, underscored by a heavy “Smoke on the Water” cover.
Featuring a ripped David Harbour (Stranger Things) replacing Ron Perlman as Hellboy, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) goes up against Nimue the Blood Queen (the Resident Evil franchise’s Milla Jovovich) as she attempts to bring about the end of the world – run of the mill stuff for the BPRD, really. Aiding Hellboy are Professor Bruttenholm (American Gods‘ Ian McShane), Alice Monaghan (rising indie actress Sasha Lane), cursed were-jaguar Ben Daimio (Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim), and the unseen-but-credited-on-IMDB Lobster Johnson (Thomas Haden Church).
Off the bat from the trailer(s) below, Marshall certainly is going for a solid R-rating, what with the few “fucks” tossed in and the upped gore and destruction ante. And, also, he and screenwriter Andrew Cosby (Eureka co-creator) are embracing some of the more fantasy and folklore elements of the Mignola trades (chief among them being Baba Yaga’s chicken-legged hut), which seem bonkers in this 2-minutes-and-change trailer but check off all the boxes for me. Snarky cursing Hellboy? Flaming crown and full horns? Fantasy and folklore figures? Ian McShane? Check, check, check, and check.
Hellboy hits theaters on April 12, 2019.
