Like it or not, Disney is continuing strong on its path to bring all of its beloved animation classics back to life in live-action. The latest ready to be brought back to life is Dumbo, directed by the always imaginative mind of Tim Burton.
Disney has surprised many with how well its new live-action remakes have gone down with both The Jungle Book and Cinderella being strongly received and Beauty and The Beast finding mostly positive praise. But even so, I wasn’t sure how a live-action take on Dumbo would go over, especially with Tim Burton, who has been inconsistent (to say the least) in recent years – considering 2016’s Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children and 2014’s Big Eyes.
But I have to say, I’m quite surprised with the warmth and sincerity found in this initial Dumbo teaser trailer. From the use of Aurora’s new rendition of the original film’s classic Oscar-nominated song “Baby Mine”, to the gorgeous old-timey circus set-pieces, decor and costumes, this feels authentic and true to the time and spirit of the original. To those who were understandably skeptical about Burton treating this like he did Alice in Wonderland, you can breathe a sigh of relief – for now.
The trailer showcases clips featuring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, as well as newcomers Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins. We’re interested to see how the film handles some of the more iconic sequences of the original when Dumbo hits theaters on March 29, 2019.
