Trailer: ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Amps Up The Western & Heists

Solo: A Star Wars Story still - the Millennium Falcon

It’s been just about two months since the first look at Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the promotion is starting to ramp up with the reveal of an official trailer.

While the teaser trailer played up the rogueish Imperial reject Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) with hints at the heist to come, this first official Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer fully basks in its Western and heist influences. From the stand-off shots to the heist crew (Tobias Beckett [Woody Harrelson], Qi’ra [Emilia Clarke], Lando Calrissian [Donald Glover], Val [Thandie Newton], and L3-37 [Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge]), Solo looks to welcome franchise fans back to a familiar yet lived-in galaxy. Yes, there are some familiar shots from the teaser, but they’re slightly expanded upon and given some additional context. And there are also a few quick glimpses of scarred crime lord Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany).

How all of this will come together in the finished film has yet to be seen, but John Powell’s cues that evoke John Williams’ Star Wars theme and Bradford Young’s Oscar-nominated cinematography promise to make it a visual and auditory treat. And given Lawrence and Jon Kasden collaborating on the script, the connection to the original trilogy should benefit Solo: A Star Wars Story, as well.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters in time for Memorial Day on May 25th.
