From A24, the entertainment company responsible for some of the 2010s New Horror wave (The Witch and It Comes At Night, among others), the first trailer for the latest family horror film Hereditary, which shocked Sundance Film Festival-goers has arrived!
The Graham family (Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Nat Wolff, and Milly Shapiro) is left reeling from the death of Ellen’s (Collette) mother, perhaps for the best, as they didn’t get along well. Peter (Wolff) and Charlie (Shapiro) are also hit hard, and the family starts to go to pieces, as the lines between sanity and insanity blur, visually portrayed by the incredibly lifelike dollhouses that Ellen constructs and sonically conveyed through the tense string score and Charlie’s tongue-clicking.
Given A24’s slate of horror-tinged dramas (or drama-tinged horror films) in recent years, as well as the buzz out of Sundance, I’m very much anticipating the family insanity featured in Hereditary, as well as an unhinged Toni Collette and a hopefully worthwhile performance from the underappreciated Gabriel Byrne.
Hereditary, from first-time director Ari Aster, hits theaters June 8, 2018.
