Leave it to the MTV Movie & TV Awards to debut the first clip from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
If you missed the news, it’s another banner year for superhero films, from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to Wonder Woman to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming reboot. And we now have the first clip!
Considering the film is out in two months and is likely nearing the end of post-production, it makes sense that the first clip isn’t action-heavy. Instead of a Spidey fight sequence (like the foiled ATM heist from the first trailer), we’re instead treated to Peter (Tom Holland) sneaking back into his room after an evening out as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man … only to be found out by his waiting friend and classmate Ned (Jacob Batalon).
You might recognize part of this scene from the two trailers. Actually, you more than likely do. And while it may seem old by now, what I like about this first Spider-Man: Homecoming clip is 1) the alternate angles of Ned’s shock, and 2) how the teen angst humor is presented. Peter seems way more concerned with keeping his powers (and suit, of course) a secret from Aunt May than in prior film incarnations – partly because of the more grounded and believable high school angle. Based on this clip and what has been presented in the trailers so far, I think this bodes well for the comedic aspects of the film – but I don’t want to count my chickens (or spiders, in this case) before they hatch.
Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, and we’ll likely get one more trailer between now and then.
