Amazon Studios released an official trailer for their big $12 million Sundance purchase, The Big Sick, with an intro from two of its stars, Kumail Nanjiani and Ray Romano. Nanjiani is the co-star of this Judd Apatow-produced film, which earned rave reviews at Sundance and is based on his real-life romance with his now-wife and co-writer Emily V. Gordon. Gordon isn’t in the film, however; in her place stands Zoe Kazan, co-starring opposite Nanjiani. The Big Sick finds the two intertwined in an unexpected romance. For one, Nanjiani’s Pakistani parents expected him to have an arranged marriage, which lends levity to the film. But their blossoming relationship takes a rapid, dramatic turn when Gordon winds up in the hospital in a medically-induced coma.
Fortunately, it all works out in the end and the parents, on both sides, embrace the couple. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter play Gordon’s parents while Bollywood star Anupam Kher is on Nanjiani’s side. Beyond the romance, the film also has found itself to possess some moments that may lead to discussions about immigration and politics (the film was made before Trump was elected). Nanjiani can be found currently on HBO playing Dinesh, the Piperchat CEO and foil to Gilfoyle, on Silicon Valley. He’s also been profiled recently in The New Yorker and The New York Times.
You can see more of him when The Big Sick, directed by Michael Showalter, opens in limited release on June 23rd, before expanding wider July 14th.
