Trailer: David Lowery’s ‘A Ghost Story’

A Ghost Story still - Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck

A24, which has made a name for itself with its quirky acquisitions and releases, has dropped a trailer for David Lowery’s upcoming A Ghost Story.

David Lowery, known for last year’s live-action Pete’s Dragon and 2013’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, is back in his contemplative niche with A Ghost Story, which he wrote, directed, and edited. The premise is simple enough: a young suburban couple (Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck) is separated when the husband dies in a car accident. And then the husband rises up from the morgue table covered by a white sheet with two eye holes and follows his wife home to watch over her before becoming unstuck in time.

To say the least, the A Ghost Story trailer is likely as haunting as the full hour-and-a-half film. The use of Dark Room’s “I Get Overwhelmed” (as mentioned by The Film Stage) helps set the stage for the moody film, and the 1.33:1 aspect ratio adds a timeless touch. And the contemplative nature that carries over from the narration lends a The Tree of Life, Voyage of Time, or Interstellar feel to the film, as well. Lowery detailed some of the production (which took place between when post-production wrapped on Pete’s Dragon and the run up to its release) of the film on his blog, for those curious enough to read on.
