Return to space, where no one can hear you scream …
Proper/classic space horror is returning to theaters next May in the form of Alien: Covenant, and the first glimpse dropped on Christmas Day at midnight – in red-band form, no less. Let’s dive right on in!
This first trailer mixes Prometheus with Alien: female protagonist (Katherine Waterston as the Ripley-esque Daniels), android with mysterious/unknown intentions (Michael Fassbender returning as David, and also doubling as Walter, part of the Covenant landing party), a crashed Engineer vessel, xenomorph eggs and infectious spores/liquids … and twisted neomorph/xenomorph kills. Then again, it IS tying the franchises together, despite still being a prequel to the quadrology and a sequel to Prometheus. Is this getting confusing yet?
In addition to the returning Michael Fassbender and director Ridley Scott, Noomi Rapace is back as Elizabeth Shaw, and Guy Pearce is also supposed to return as Peter Weyland. As for new cast members, the trailer provided glimpses of Danny McBride, Jussie Smollett, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, and Amy Seimetz as Covenant crew members – but not included (from what I could see) was James Franco and Demian Bichir, among the small cast listed on the film’s IMDB page.
All things considered, I’m eager to see if Alien: Covenant lives up to or exceeds the hype, unlike Prometheus, which had its good moments but was bogged down.
Alien: Covenant stalks into theaters on May 19, 2017.
