With just over two months until its release, Lucasfilm has dropped the final Rogue One trailer – with a poster to boot!
Yesterday on “The Star Wars Show”, director Gareth Edwards stopped by with the likely final poster for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film and announced that the final trailer would be unveiled tomorrow which is now today … so without further ado, the final Rogue One trailer!
If it wasn’t clear from the earlier trailers, it’s even clearer from this final trailer: This is Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) movie. Yes, it’s an ensemble film set in the Star Wars universe pre-Episode IV: A New Hope, but Jyn and her journey make up the heart of the film. Years after her father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) is captured by Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), Jyn is freed by a small Rebel contingent likely because they believe she is their “in” to gain access to the plans to what audiences know to be the Death Star. From there, it’s a race against time to get the plans, aid the Rebellion, and save the day … well, saving the day comes in Episode IV, but you knew that already.
One thing I enjoyed about the trailer (apart from the fact it was missing the blaring alarm from the last trailer) was the Episode IV callback: instead of Luke looking out over the horizon to see two setting suns, Galen looks out to see Krennic and his Deathtroopers arriving to bring him in. Otherwise, there are the X-Wing dogfights, Mon Mothma’s (Geneveive O’Reilly) war room, selections of Michael Giacchino’s score echoing iconic Star Wars themes, and the elephant in the room – by which I mean Darth Vader.
As for the poster (at the top), it’s definitely eye-catching, even if there’s some gigantic Floating Head Syndrome going on with a bit of Vader lurking in the shadows of the Death Star.
Rogue One arrives in theaters on December 16, almost a year after Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
