The Olympics set the stage tonight for the big time premiere of the first full trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, following the teaser trailer that was released back in April.
Helmed by director Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla), Rogue One takes us back between the timelines of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. This time around, we follow the journey of a group of rebel soldiers led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) as they try to steal the plans for the Empire’s Death Star. The rest of the crew is rounded out by Rebel Alliance operative Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), fighter Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and security droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). Then there’s also Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker. To try and steal the plans, they’ll have to get through the path of Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), the imperial commander in charge of the building of the Death Star, and the commander of the Death Troopers.
As the first spin-off of the ever-expanding Star Wars cinematic universe, it will be exciting to see how Edwards will explore this universe further, doing some things without the normal restrictions of an episodic Star Wars event (as in an action-packed heist film). At the same time, it will dip in-between the well-known Star Wars timeline, giving us some insight into how the Death Star plans eventually got to Princess Leia as we all saw in A New Hope.
The new trailer sports plenty of action, Edwards’ ability to demonstrate the sheer scale of everything in this universe, and the diverse and eclectic cast that should certainly please all who feel Hollywood is lacking diversity. Oh, and lets not forget the quick but effective glimpse at our old friend, Darth Vader.
Enjoy the new trailer below, which will hopefully hold us over until Rogue One’s release date on December 16.
