It’s hard to believe it’s been five whole year since we said goodbye to the Harry Potter series with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. But it wasn’t truly goodbye, as we are about to be welcomed back into the magical world of wizards once again with the spin-off/prequel of sorts, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
J.K. Rowling makes her first true screenwriting credit here, telling a new tale of a wizard named Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), who was kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with “a beast.” Yet one of his teachers argued against his expulsion, just someone by the name of Albus Dumbledore. So the series comes full circle (dramatic version of the theme song and all), even though Fantastic Beasts takes place in New York City, 70 years before the events involving “The Boy Who Lived” took place.
We got our first taste of this new world with a brief teaser in December, and yesterday Warner Bros unleashed the first full trailer during the MTV Movie Awards.
It’s great to see magical happenings taking place in old school New York. It does enough to get us excited to re-enter this world, without giving us too much information or plot spoilers. And it looks like it will be a nice exciting non Oscar-bait role for Eddie Redmayne (that isn’t Jupiter Ascending). The cast also features a solid lineup of Katherine Waterson, Colin Farrell, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Samantha Morton, Carmen Ejogo, Jenn Murray, and Faith Wood-Blagrove.
David Yates, who directed the final four installments of Harry Potter (as well as this year’s The Legend Of Tarzan), returned to the directors chair, a smart move that clearly will keep the same style across the board from here on out.
Enjoy the trailer below.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released by Warner Bros on November 18th.
