Ready to dive back into the Star Wars universe (and in time) a year after The Force Awakens?
After months of casting announcements and little else, there’s finally a teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!
Edwards takes audiences back to the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope to the only-talked-about plot point of a group of Rebels stealing the plans to the original Death Star. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly – a dead ringer for Caroline Blakiston who also appeared as Mon Mothma in a deleted Revenge of the Sith scene) recruits Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) to be part of a small team, along with Diego Luna, to go behind enemy lines and steal the aforementioned plans. From the haunting take on John Williams’ iconic Luke Skywalker theme to Jyn’s rap sheet to all the ass-kicking to the AT-ATs and Stormtroopers galore, I’m sold.
Little else is known about the cast and their roles, but I’d venture to guess that Forest Whitaker is an older Dark or Shadow Stormtrooper based on his costuming. Ben Mendelsohn is a high-ranking Imperial officer, just based on his white suit and flowing robe. As for Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen, the Empire isn’t catching them unawares. The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Alistair Petrie (possibly Mon Mothma’s right-hand man in the trailer), Jonathan Aris, and Riz Ahmed.
Gareth Edwards directs Rogue One: A Star Wars Story based on Chris Weitz’s screenplay, which is a story by John Knoll (who has prior VFX supervising work on most of the franchise at ILM) and Gary Whitta. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to hit theaters on December 16, 2016.
