The USS Enterprise crew is boldly exploring without a ship in the first Star Trek Beyond teaser!
After directing the first two films in the rebooted franchise, director JJ Abrams has taken a step back to produce Star Trek Beyond, letting Justin Lin, the director of 4 Fast & The Furious films, take over. However, that appears to come with yet another destroyed USS Enterprise. And plenty of stunt work, perhaps a la the Fast & Furious franchise – but I wouldn’t know, as I haven’t gone near any of the films. On the plus side, Simon Pegg co-wrote the script with Doug Jung, and Pegg’s humor pokes its head out during several moments in the trailer. All that being said, the plot is still under wraps, but it appears that the Enterprise goes down during a meteor shower or attack, and the crew abandons ship on an alien planet and has to fight for survival. Meanwhile, they’re beset by a potential ally (played by Sofia Boutella) and the antagonist Krall (Idris Elba) who is briefly glimpsed in the footage – according to Slashfilm’s interview with Lin.
In any case, this is enough of a teaser to keep my interest in the franchise – not counting the use of “Sabotage” by The Beastie Boys. And it’s yet another trailer that was rumored to run before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That rumor, however, has been quashed, but the recent Batman v. Superman, Independence Day: Resurgence, and Captain America: Civil War trailers will, among others.
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22, 2016 with Justin Lin directing a script from Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D. Payne, and Patrick McKay. The returning cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and John Cho.
