The first trailer for Zoolander 2 (or 2oolander if you’re obnoxious) hit the web yesterday, and this video is so hot right now.
Ben Stiller and the whole team have been dropping hints and teases over the course of production, but this is the first full look at the sequel to the 2001 comedy. I’ve enjoyed my 15 years at the Daiye Spa, but it’s great to finally see what screenwriters Stiller, Justin Theroux, Nicholas Stoller and John Hamburg have cooked up.
Directed once again by Stiller, Zoolander 2 takes us 15 years into the future. Both Derek Zoolander and Hansel are now dinosaurs in the male modeling industry, being replaced by more outlandish and androgynous models like All (an amazing Benedict Cumberbatch). But an Interpol operative (Penélope Cruz) recruits Derek and Hansel to help solve the mystery of why the world’s most beautiful people (including, unfortunately, Justin Bieber), are being assassinated.
The trailer leans a lot on the first film (there’s plenty of stock footage used from its predecessor, we get the glorious return of Will Ferrell’s Mugatu) and while this is again looking to combine the worlds of modeling and international espionage, there is enough new material to get fans excited. The tone appears just as loose and self aware, and the newcomers (Cruz, Kristen Wiig, Kyle Mooney, Jon Daly) all look like they bring their own sensibilities to this ridiculous world. While we also got our first look at Derek Jr., there is unfortunately no Christine Taylor as Matilda Jeffries. Nor was there a Billy Zane sighting. Both are slated to appear in the film, so we’ll have to wait and see what kind of roles they will have.
Comedy sequels are always tricky, especially 15 years removed from the original, but the trailer leads me to think that Zoolander 2 will be more like Anchorman 2 than Dumb and Dumber To.
Zoolander 2 hits theaters on February 12, 2016, and if it indeed is what day you claim it is, I have a pre-runway party to attend.
