Hot off the award season success of Birdman (which won Best Picture, Director, Cinematography and Original Screenplay), director Alejandro González Iñárritu looks to continue his winning streak in a big way with his next film, The Revenant.
The movie tells the tale of legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team, including his confident John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Motivated by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass vows to take his revenge, even if it means navigated through a vicious winter. The script was written by Iñárritu and Mark L. Smith, based off Michael Punke’s novel, which is based on true events.
Today the first trailer for the film was released, and it’s breathtaking. Immediately you’re drawn in to the beautiful cinematography, shot all in natural light in remote locations. This is credit to Birdman cinamatographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who looks to be a lock to repeat with more Oscar gold next year.
The footage is drawn together by a minimalistic, but powerful score, featuring some award worthy performances from DiCaprio and possibly Hardy as well. This may finally be Leo’s year. It also features performances from Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter and Lukas Haas.
Expectations are sky high all around. We can’t wait to see how The Revenant turns out, come Christmas Day. Find the trailer posted below.
