1) Marvelous Marvel: The Avengers Storm To the Top of the Box Office
No surprise there. Last Thursday, Marvel’s Age of Ultron was released in the United States to some big numbers. The film had already been out internationally for over a week, grossing $439 million. The Avengers raked in an additional $187.7 million on its domestic opening weekend, bringing the total to $626.7 million as of May 3rd. Including Thursday night tickets, Age of Ultron achieved the second-highest opening weekend gross of all time, and also broke every opening record for IMAX screenings. It currently holds a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read Will’s review here.
2) The Rogues of Task Force X Revealed
Last night, DC released the first image of the cast of Suicide Squad, the film adaption coming in 2016. Along with Jared Leto’s Joker and the coming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC seems to be trying to get its cinematic universe pieced together before the decade is out. Director David Ayer also tweeted this photo of Will Smith in his full Deadshot gear.
3) Sony Pictures Makes ‘Jump Street’ / ‘Men in Black’ Crossover Official
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier. Sony announced it’s serious about the Jump Street/Men in Black crossover film, and Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum are on board. Who knows how they’ll pull it off, but with the creative license each series offers, I don’t doubt that we’ll all be splitting our sides. They’re also planning a female-lead Jump Street spinoff! Read more about it here.
4) ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ Getting a Sequel
20th Century Fox announced that it’s developing a sequel to the February blockbuster Kingsman: The Secret Service. The film was a bright action ride set amongst the lull of the early year, we enjoyed it, and it’s nice to have more fresh franchises out in theaters. Kingsman went on to gross over $400 million at the box office.
